PULLMAN, Wash. — The body of a man was found inside a structure fire near College Hill, according to Pullman Fire Department (PFD).
Firefighters responded to a report of smoke coming from a small structure on College Hill shortly before 7 a.m. today. Upon entering, they discovered the body of a man.
According to PFD, the death investigation was handed over to Pullman Police and Whitman County Coroner Annie Pillers, who said the victim was not affiliated with Washington State University.
According to PFD, a neighbor reported smelling burning plastic and saw smoke coming from the structure, prompting a 911 call.
Fire Marshal Darren Jones said crews faced debris inside, making entry difficult, and found discarded cigarettes and electrical cords.
Firefighters contained the blaze before it spread to nearby apartment buildings. Most units were unoccupied due to the university’s winter break.
Authorities will check if the structure is an approved residence. Traffic was diverted for several hours.
The fire’s cause is under investigation.
