SPOKANE, Wash. — Nearly 300 of boxes were filled with Thanksgiving meals for people in need Wednesday morning.
One Heart Spokane, a local nonprofit, teams up with local schools to identify families in need every year. This year, it was able to feed more families than ever before.
Nearly 200 volunteers came out to pack boxes at Wednesday’s event, filling them with everything from turkey to pumpkin pie.
“I’ve been homeless so I know what it’s like being out there without having anything,” said volunteer William Jones. “To be able to give back to the community to help other families get what they need, it’s a big joy.”
Thanks to the generosity of community donations, One Heart Spokane was able to feed 290 local families Thanksgiving meals this year.
“To continue to see more and more generosity come through people to our city is just such a joy to see people care about our city the way they do,” said One Heart Spokane executive director Richie Shaw.
To provide even more relief for the families, all the food packed was pre-made and ready to go.
“Some people they don’t have those utensils or the utilities at home to do that as well. So why not try to meet that need as well and come prepared with a fully cooked meal for them?” Justin Vaughn, One Heart program director said.
Not only did the volunteers box the food, they also hand delivered them to families across Spokane.
“I think it’s a big deal, especially for a lot of the people we connect with here. Little things like this add up pretty quick. Sometimes it’s between a meal or gas or they aren’t sure about rent and just by having a big meal they don’t have to be concerned about it. I think that goes a long way,” said volunteer Daniel Dondzilo.
The goal is for everyone to have a stress-free and happy Thanksgiving.
