This past weekend, we experienced the first snow of the season — a light dusting that covered everything in a soft, wintery blanket. But then, Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, we got the real deal: a few solid inches of snow! Naturally, we bundled up and headed outside to make the most of it.
My son was absolutely thrilled. The moment he stepped outside, his face lit up with excitement. Watching him dive right in, practicing his army crawls in the snow and gleefully throwing snowballs, reminded me of how magical snow can be when you see it through the eyes of a child. For him, it’s a whole new world, and his pure joy is contagious.
I grew up in Southern California, so snow is still a novelty for me, even after living here for two years. I have to admit, every snowfall feels a bit magical, and I’m in awe of how beautiful and peaceful everything looks covered in white. But I also know myself — ask me how I feel about the snow come March, and I might give you a very different response! As much as I love it now, I’m sure I’ll be ready for spring by the time winter drags on.
With the cold weather settling in, it’s a good reminder that winter can sometimes bring on the blues. So, as we get ready for more snow and the chillier days ahead, I’ve been thinking about ways to stay positive and beat the winter blues. Here are a few things I plan to do to keep my spirits high:
1. Embrace the Outdoors (Even When It’s Cold!)
While it’s tempting to stay inside, there’s something so refreshing about a crisp walk in the snow or playing outside with my kids. The fresh air is invigorating, and we can always warm up with hot cocoa afterward! Plus, winter activities like sledding or ice skating can be so much fun.
2. Indulge in Cozy Activities
Winter is the perfect time to cozy up indoors with a good book, a blanket, and a warm drink. I love lighting some candles and enjoying a slow, peaceful evening. And of course, it’s the season for baking — cookies, pies, or whatever your heart desires. A warm kitchen is the perfect antidote to the cold outside.
3. Stay Active
It’s easy to want to curl up and hibernate during the colder months, but keeping active can really help lift your mood. Whether it’s a home workout, yoga, or a weekend walk, getting your body moving helps combat those sluggish feelings that can creep up in winter.
4. Find Joy in the Little Things
Sometimes, the little things can have the biggest impact. Whether it’s enjoying a holiday movie, making a snowman with the kids, or simply savoring the stillness of a snowy morning, taking time to appreciate the season’s simple pleasures helps keep me grounded.
5. Plan Fun Activities
Having something to look forward to can make all the difference. Whether it’s a weekend getaway, a special winter event, or even just a dinner with friends, planning activities that bring joy can help break up the monotony of winter.
So, as we settle into the season, I’m going to enjoy the snow, the cozy moments, and the magic of winter through my kids’ eyes. What about you? As the days get shorter and the temperatures drop, how do you stay positive and avoid the winter blues? I’d love to hear your favorite winter activities and tips!
