After the first round of ballots counted on election night in Washington, as of 10:53 p.m., it appears Senator Maria Cantwell will hold on to her position.
Election night returns show Cantwell leading political newcomer Dr. Raul Garcia 59.77% to 40%.
Cantwell, a Democrat, assumed office in 2001.
Garcia is a Republican and is the medical director of Astria Toppenish Hospital in Yakima County.
He previously ran for governor of Washington, but dropped out of the race to run against Cantwell.
