VANCOUVER, Wash. — Both U.S. Senator Patty Murray and U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell delivered statements following the ballot drop box arson incidents reported early Monday morning.
Senator Murray issued the following statement,
The destruction of ballots in any way, shape, or form runs totally counter to our fundamental values as Americans. Whoever is responsible must be held accountable, and I trust law enforcement to do its job here. We must make sure every citizen is able to participate in our democratic process. No voter should be deterred. Your vote is your voice in a democracy. I urge anyone who dropped off a ballot this weekend at the Fisher’s Landing Transit Center to contact the Clark County Elections Office and request a replacement immediately. No one’s voice should be silenced due to arson or political violence anywhere in America. Every elected official and leader has a responsibility to condemn any acts of political terror and violence—whether it’s threats against poll workers or the destruction of ballots. – Senator Murray
Senator Cantwell delivered the following remarks about the ballot drop box arson incident.
I have been in contact with Washington State Secretary of State Steve Hobbs. My office has been in contact with the FBI, the Department of Homeland Security, and the cyber security agency the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) focused on infrastructure within the Department of Homeland Security. Washington [is] one of the highest voting percentage states in the country. Washingtonians will not be intimidated when it comes to voting. I want state and local officials to know that we will make sure any federal resources necessary to help carry out the elections will be available to them and continue to update people, as we get more information. — Senator Cantwell
