Seattle Mariners catcher Mitch Garver donates to Spokane youth baseball team

SPOKANE, Wash. — A major league baseball player stepped up in a big way for a Spokane little league team.

Mariners catcher Mitch Garver donated $15,000 to send the Spokane Dirtags to the West Zone Regional in California.

Garver played baseball with some of the coaches back in New Mexico. So when the Dirtbags reach out for help, it was a no-brainer for Garver to donate.

“It was a team that had an opportunity to do something but didn’t have the means to do it,” Garver said. “I took that upon myself. I saw their GoFundMe page had almost no help coming in financially so there was an opportunity for me to help out. Initially I was going to donate a few hundred, a few thousand dollars to get them on their way. I just realized an opportunity to do something for these kids that they deserved. So I decided to fund it all. “

The Dirtbags were the All-City champs and were the first Spokane team in recent memory to participate in the regional tournament.

They will be competing through the weekend.
