SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — One of two Spokane County sheriff’s deputies critically injured in Tuesday’s deadly shooting has died, according to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.
The deputy died Tuesday night and is survived by his wife and two children, the sheriff’s office said. His name has not been released.
The second deputy remains on life support in critical condition and is not expected to survive, according to the sheriff’s office. The deputy is an organ donor, and arrangements are being considered for organ donation.
“Although we know our deputies knew the risks, they bravely moved toward danger to protect others they did not know. They did this with honor and with an unwavering sense of duty to their oath to serve and protect the citizens of Spokane County; they heroically placed themselves in mortal danger,” Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels said.
The Spokane Independent Investigative Response Team, or SIIR, is investigating the deputy-involved shooting, as well as the original domestic violence shooting and homicide, according to the sheriff’s office. Washington State Patrol is serving as the point of contact for the investigation.
The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office and Spokane Valley Police Department will not participate in the investigation. Once SIIR completes its investigation, the case will be forwarded to the Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office for review.
