SPOKANE, Wash. — Voters Night Live used comedy skits to break down topics on the ballot, rules for candidates and the different ways people vote across the country.
Eliana Santiago, host of Voters Night Live, said voting can feel dull, so the event set out to avoid that. “A big issue with voting is that it can be a little bit boring, so we aren’t going to let it be boring.”
The event gave audience members a chance to hear from candidates running in state and local elections. For elected officials who attended, it offered a way to connect with younger voters and hear which issues matter most to them.
“Young people are volunteering at record numbers and a lot of them are feeling like the system is rigged, but they are pushing back against that and saying, ‘hey, we have to work from the inside. We are our government and we are going to participate and make sure our voices are heard.'” said Washington State Senator Marcus Riccelli.
Santiago said the stakes extend beyond Spokane. “The younger people are the future of the whole world, not just Spokane, and not just America. It’s really important for us to be able to share what we want from the world that we are going to be living in. We gotta make the world that we want to be in.”
