SPOKANE, Wash. — Thrive International has helped hundreds of refugee families in Spokane secure housing, but the organization’s building was recently sold, forcing them to relocate the 80 families who were housed there.
At a farewell party Thursday night, Thrive displayed the names of all 1,200 people who have called the facility home.
While the paper and tape displaying the names may be temporary, the impact Thrive has had on these families is written in permanent marker.
“I’m really proud of this city and I’m really proud that we can be a part of the story of welcoming folks and helping them find a new family and feel at home,” said Thrive’s executive director Mark Finney.
For many of Thrive’s families, the organization was their first impression of the United States, with many fleeing war or seeking better opportunities. In the face of adversity, Thrive’s residents turned their impossible challenges into something positive and welcomed each new person into their adoptive family.
“I really appreciate American families and the American communities that have supported us in our first steps here,” Thrive resident Nadia Solovey said. “Now, I have my big family, not just my community, but all of the people that have supported us in the American community.”
The residents and staff of Thrive International were especially reflective on what the organization had done for the entire community.
“We’ve been a part of helping launch folks out to all different parts of their community and it’s neat to be able to say that our fingerprints are on 600 families who are doing great and making our community better,” Finney said.
While the organization may be looking for a new building, it knows the people, not the building, will always be home.
“That’s what we wanted,” Finney said. “To make people feel at home.”
Thrive has been able to relocate all 80 families who were living in its halls and intent to continue its mission in a new home, wherever that may be.
