PULLMAN, Wash – Washington State University is making a change at quarterback, hoping to right the ship after a 1-5 start to the season.
WSU Coach Kirby Moore announced in the weekly press conference Monday Owen Eshelman will get the start instead of Caden Pinnick.
“Caden understands this is a team-first decision,” Moore said. “It’s about doing what’s best for the team moving into the second half of the season.”
Moore said Eshelman has been “right there” in the quarterback room for the last 10 months and has prepared like a starter.
Moore said regardless of who is playing quarterback, the team has not risen to the occasion in key areas.
“We understand the frustration with being 1-5, no place more than in our building,” Moore said.
He said the coaches made the quarterback decision after Saturday’s game, seeing too many missed opportunities, especially in the red zone.
Pinnick threw for 156 yards and no touchdowns in the loss at Utah State. WSU was 5/19 on third down conversions, which has been a problem for the Cougars for most of the season.
Moore said coaches met with Pinnick and Eshelman Monday morning to discuss the change. He said Pinnick is disappointed, but understand he has a choice now to support his team and his teammates.
“For Owen, I think naturally, there’s excitement,” Moore said. “I know he can’t wait to get on the field with his teammates.
WSU’s only win came against FCS-level Duquesne.
WSU and Oregon State kick off at 3 pm Saturday in Corvallis.
