WASHINGTON — The Seattle Seahawks fell to the Washington Commanders 33-31 Sunday after a late interception return proved to be the difference.
Seattle trailed 24-10 early in the second half before rallying behind Sam Darnold. The quarterback connected with Jaxon Smith-Njigba for two fourth-quarter touchdowns, including an 11-yard score that tied the game at 24 with 11:53 remaining.
Washington answered with a field goal before Kain Medrano intercepted Darnold and returned it 50 yards for a touchdown with 3:57 left. The extra point failed, giving Seattle a chance.
Darnold quickly drove the Seahawks down the field and found Cooper Kupp for a seven-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 33-31 with 2:51 remaining. Seattle couldn’t get the ball back.
Darnold finished 31-of-45 for 379 yards, four touchdowns and two interceptions. Smith-Njigba had 10 catches for 128 yards and two scores.
Marcus Mariota threw for 183 yards and three touchdowns for Washington, with Terry McLaurin and Treylon Burks each catching a touchdown.
The Seahawks return home next Sunday to face the Los Angeles Chargers, who are still searching for their first win of the season.
