SPOKANE, WASH. — Construction workers and district officials gathered to sign the final beam at the future site of Adams Elementary before it was raised into place, marking a significant milestone in the building project.
The new school is approximately one year away from opening its doors to students. The construction began just four months ago, but Principal Beth Nye said the wait has been worth it for the school community.
“We have been fighting a long time to get a modern building built for our students and our student, staff community that will bring them a modern education,” Nye said.
The original Adams Elementary, constructed in 1907, was the oldest school in Spokane. The aging building presented significant challenges for students and staff, lacking ADA accessibility features and modern amenities such as elevators and ramps.
The new facility will address these deficiencies with fully accessible features throughout the building. Beyond accessibility improvements, the new Adams Elementary will include upgraded gymnasium and theater facilities that will enhance the educational experience for students.
“The biggest thing is that we are actually going to have a separate gym and auditorium,” Nye said. “So when we have musical events, it gives us a chance to have that happen in a space that’s lovely for our students and families that come to enjoy these events.”
The new building will also serve a broader purpose within the South Spokane community. Space within the facility will be utilized by the Boys and Girls Club, extending the building’s impact beyond the school day and providing additional resources for families in the area.
Despite the project’s relatively recent start, Nye expressed enthusiasm about the transformation ahead for the school community.
“Hang in there! We are enjoying Camp Adams, but just wait until we get over here. We are about to have a brand new beautiful building and its going to be an exciting year,” Nye said.
The construction is expected to be completed in time for the next school year.
