If you’re a fan of The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, you’ve probably seen the news that Mikayla Matthews is officially stepping away from the show, and now she’s explaining why.
Mikayla says the decision came after she found out that a certain person was returning for Season 6. She didn’t name Taylor Frankie Paul directly, but it’s pretty obvious who she’s talking about. Mikayla says she told production she would not film if that person came back because she felt the situation was “unethical” and that kids were involved.
She also says there were things she had “seen and heard” beyond the now-infamous video of Taylor Frankie Paul throwing a chair at her ex, Dakota Mortensen, with a child nearby. Mikayla says she filmed what had already been planned for Season 6, but once she was told Taylor was coming back, she decided she was done.
And honestly… I have thoughts.
I am a fan of this show. I’ve watched the drama, the friendships, the marriages, the breakups, all of it. BUT I haven’t even watched Season 5 yet because I am just over all of the Taylor Frankie Paul drama.
Reality TV is supposed to be messy. I KNOW that. The drama is literally part of why we watch. But at some point, watching the same person go through the same chaos without seeing much growth becomes exhausting. It starts to feel repetitive, and I’m at the point where I’m like… can we PLEASE move on?
Mikayla clearly feels strongly enough about the situation that she is willing to walk away from a show that has become a huge part of her life and helped provide for her family. She says there is “no amount of money” worth going against her morals, especially because of her own experiences growing up in a home with abuse.
For her, this obviously goes way beyond reality TV drama.
Meanwhile, Taylor’s camp says she is focused on moving forward and that coming back to the show allows her to do that. Hulu has not commented on Mikayla’s exit.
As for me? I’m curious to see where the show goes from here. Because I love a messy reality show as much as the next person, but there’s a difference between entertaining messy and watching the same cycle over and over again.
And right now, I’m just not sure I have the energy for another round.
