SPOKANE, Wash. — Thousands of families in Spokane County depend on school meals to feed their children during the week. But when the school day ends, that critical safety net disappears for children facing food insecurity.
Second Harvest is stepping in to bridge that gap with its Bite2Go program, which ensures access to nutritious food extends beyond the classroom. As the school year approaches in just weeks, the organization is preparing to distribute meals and snacks that children can take home for the weekend.
“For kids it is just relief over the weekend,” said Steve Durham, a team member at Second Harvest. “For kids who are facing hunger, the weekend is a really long time. This just gives them the nutrition they need to get through the weekend. So when they show up on Monday they are ready to go in the classroom.”
Second Harvest partners with local businesses, faith groups, and community organizations to bring the program to schools and neighborhoods throughout the region.
Community members can support Bite2Go by sponsoring a child with a monetary donation or volunteering to distribute meals. You can learn more about the program by clicking this link.
