SPOKANE, Wash. — As temperatures rise across the Inland Northwest, Meals on Wheels Spokane is stepping up efforts to keep local seniors safe and comfortable through its annual fan drive.
The organization launched the initiative in May to collect fans for seniors throughout the community. The response has been significant, with nearly 400 fans already requested. That number is expected to rise as the region braces for hotter weather in the coming weeks.
For many seniors in Spokane, having a fan delivered directly to their home addresses a critical need, since the organizations clients are confined to their home.
“When we look at this, a lot of these folks don’t have any opportunity to get out because they are homebound. So something as simple as a fan just to move the air inside their home means a ton,” said Owen Esperas, Director of Meals on Wheels.
To receive a fan through the program, people must be Meals on Wheels clients. The organization requires clients to be at least 60 years old. Those interested in supporting the drive can donate a new fan to Meals on Wheels, purchase one through the organization’s Amazon wish list, or make a monetary donation.
