There is nothing quite like hitting the “off” switch on a long, chaotic day, pouring a generous glass of wine, and settling in for a good, old-fashioned murder mystery. If you are a true crime documentary girlie like me, you know that true relaxation means unlocking your inner detective from the safety of your couch.
Right now, I am completely hyper-fixated on two massive streaming franchises that are taking the genre to a whole new level. If your watchlist is looking a little dry, grab your favorite vintage and add these to the top of your queue immediately.
1. Betrayal: Under His Eye (Hulu)
If you haven’t dove into the Betrayal universe yet, you are missing out on some of the most jaw-dropping storytelling on television.
-
- The Vibe: A masterclass in deception, psychological twists, and hidden lives.
- The Backstory: The entire television franchise is adapted from the wildly popular Betrayal Podcast, which expertly deconstructs real-life fairytales that turned into absolute nightmares.
- Why You Need to Watch: The latest installment, Betrayal: Under His Eye, is a tight, three-part docuseries on Hulu that tracks the terrifying double life of a respected physician. It starts with the discovery of a hidden camera and rapidly spirals into an active murder plot orchestrated from behind bars. It is incredibly fast-paced, deeply unsettling, and will absolutely keep you on your toes until the final frame.
2. Worst Neighbor Ever (Netflix)
Netflix has officially turned their “Worst Ever” anthology into a full-blown franchise, and I am completely obsessed with their newest drop.
-
- The Vibe: Suburban paranoia, petty feuds gone lethal, and localized terror.
- The Family Tree: If you loved the absolute chaos of Worst Roommate Ever or the gripping drama of Worst Ex Ever on Netflix, consider this your mandatory next binge.
- Why You Need to Watch: Dropping as a four-part docuseries, Worst Neighbor Ever explores the terrifying reality that you never truly know who lives next door. Using a mix of firsthand victim testimonies, chilling police bodycam footage, and stylized animations, it shows the unfathomable lengths people will go to torment those sharing their property lines. From escalating property disputes to literal explosions, it will make you want to double-check your deadbolts and wave a little more politely to your neighbors tomorrow morning.
What’s On Your Watchlist?
Both of these shows perfectly capture the chilling reality of human nature, proving that sometimes the scariest monsters are the ones sitting at your dinner table—or mowing the lawn next door.
