CLARK FORK, Idaho – A 65-year-old California man died Saturday morning when the vehicle he was riding in veered off Highway 200 and crashed into a rock face near Clark Fork in Bonner County, according to Idaho State Police.
Idaho State Police responded to the single-vehicle collision at approximately 6:22 a.m. on State Highway 200, police said. A Hyundai Equus traveling east left the roadway and struck the rock face, according to authorities.
The vehicle carried two occupants: a 45-year-old female driver from San Pedro, California, and the 65-year-old male passenger from Union City, California, police said. The driver was wearing her seatbelt at the time of the crash, but the passenger was not, according to Idaho State Police.
Emergency responders transported the driver to a nearby hospital by ground ambulance, police said. The male passenger died at the scene from his injuries. Police have notified next of kin, according to authorities.
The crash forced authorities to reduce traffic on Highway 200 to one lane for approximately four hours while emergency crews assisted those involved, conducted their investigation and cleared the scene, Idaho State Police said.
Idaho State Police investigators found evidence at the crash site indicating that drugs or alcohol may have played a role in the collision, according to police. That evidence remains part of the ongoing investigation.
