SPOKANE VALLEY — Spokane Valley could get a new ice rink after a local donor offered to pay $44 million to build it. The city council will vote on the project next week.
The ice rink would be built on 11 acres next to Sullivan Park. The 65,000-square-foot complex would include a hotel and commercial building.
The Spokane Jr. Chiefs youth hockey team supports the proposal. The team practices at Eagles Ice Arena, but Executive Director Mo Morrison says they need more ice time.
“It would be a huge positive for us. The City of Spokane needs more ice. I think that our program is really at max capacity right now,” Morrison said.
Team members attended Tuesday’s city council meeting to support the project. The council voted to consider a 99-year lease on the land.
Two council members voted against the proposal, including Al Merkel. He supports youth sports but questions spending an estimated $3 million in city money for infrastructure.
“Spokane Valley residents deserve honest answers, full disclosure, and real accountability before this deal proceeds,” Merkel said.
The city council will make a final decision next Tuesday. If approved, the ice rink would open by June 2027.
