SPOKANE, Wash. — Dozens of protesters marched through downtown Spokane Sunday to protest ICE.
The demonstration started at Riverfront Park and made multiple stops, including City Hall and the federal courthouse. Several pedestrians cheered them on as they marched.
“If you’re brown, you get tackled. You can disappear and it’s dangerous out there,” said Dianne Denenny, a protester.
Rocky Kerr, another protester, said the march was “to show solidarity to the people in Minnesota and Minneapolis who are suffering under the brutal tactics of ICE.”
Organizers provided face coverings and safety goggles to participants and urged them to remain on the sidewalk to avoid confrontation with law enforcement. A street medic was among the group to ensure everyone was safe.
For some demonstrators, the protest was about speaking out on a national issue. For others, it was personal.
“I have two adopted children, both from Korea,” Kerr said. “My daughter got ahold of me last week and said, ‘I need a copy of my citizenship papers, so I can prove I’m American.’ And that, that’s just wrong.”
Sunday marked the final event in a week-long series of anti-ICE protests. There’s no word yet on whether another demonstration is planned.
