SEATTLE, Wash – Super Bowl Sunday will likely be the last time the Seattle Seahawks play under the team’s current ownership.
According to ESPN, the team will go up for sale after the game.
The article cites unnamed sources as saying discussions about the sale have gone on for the past week.
Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen bought the Seahawks in 1997 and owned the team until his death in 2018. His estate currently owns the franchise, managed by his sister Jody.
The estate also owns the Portland Trailblazers.
Jody Allen said in 2018 that the teams would eventually be for sale, but didn’t say when.
She said in a statement back then, “A time will come when that changes given Paul’s plans to dedicate the vast majority of his wealth to philanthropy, but estates of this size and complexity can take 10 to 20 years to wind down. There is no pre-ordained timeline by which the teams must be sold.”
Sportico ranks the Seahawks as the 14th most valuable NFL franchise, worth an estimated $6.59 billion.
The Seahawks franchise began in 1976, with the Nordstrom estate and Herman Sarkowsky as owners.
Ken Behring and Ken Hofmann bought the team in 1998 and owned it until selling to Allen in 1997 for $200 million.
