SPOKANE, Wash. – City and county crews are hard at work to clear the roads after the region received its heaviest snowfall of the season.
Spokane city and county officials had been preparing for the storm for days before it arrived, deploying crews for deicing and street preparation operations.
“With our 20-hour winter operations, we have crews out there doing things. Whether it’s deicing, prepping, you know, streets before the snow comes or, you know, frost in the morning,” said Kirstin Davis, Public Works Communication Manager.
The extensive snow removal operation covers a massive area. Spokane County alone is responsible for maintaining more than 5,100 lane miles of roadway.
“We’re responsible for over 5100 lane miles. That’s a lot of roads to try and keep clear. So primary focus, main arterials and emergency routes. When all of those are cleared off, the crews moved into secondary roads. After that, they will be moving on into residential,” said Martha Lou Wheatley-Billeter, Spokane County Communications Manager.
Both city and county officials anticipate beginning work on residential roads tomorrow, but they are asking residents to help with the snow removal process.
Officials are requesting that residents clear storm drains at the corners of their blocks to prevent flooding and ice formation.
“It would be helpful if people had cleared the storm drains on the corner of their blocks, so all that snow melt has some place to go and it doesn’t freeze overnight and create a skating rink,” Wheatley-Billeter said.
City residents are also being asked to follow parking restrictions during snowy weather. Vehicles should be moved to the odd-numbered side of streets to allow snowplows better access for clearing operations.
The coordinated response demonstrates the extensive planning and resources required to maintain road safety during significant winter weather events in the Spokane area. Crews continue working to restore normal travel conditions as quickly and safely as possible.
