SHORELINE, WASH. — Governor Bob Ferguson shared updates Friday on State Route 2 which sustained extensive damage during the recent flooding.
“Fully opening Highway 2 is going to take time, a long time,” the Governor said during a press conference in Shoreline.
The Governor said starting Monday, December 29 at 6 a.m. a limited section of Highway 2 will be accessible from the east from Coles Corner to Stevens Pass, and Stevens Pass will be open for skiing.
WSDOT will have a pilot car to take people back and forth between Mile Posts 64 and 85. Because it’ll use just one lane to escort drivers back and forth, expect significant delays.
WSDOT says it’ll use the pilot car program for 30 days, and it will operate from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Governor Ferguson iterated he understands how important the ski communities are to the area and for local businesses that have suffered following the storms.
Julie Meredith, the WSDOT Secretary of Transportation, said crews are working around the clock to fix sections of Highway 2 that were washed out. She said access to SR2 from the westside will remain closed.
Leavenworth Mayor Carl J. Florea joined the press conference applauding the efforts to fix the roadway.
“As ‘Christmas Town USA,’ it’s been devastating (to have Hwy 2 closed during the holidays.)”
The Governor said he’ll give an update on damage around Skykomish while visiting the area on Tuesday.
