SPOKANE, Wash. — The U.S. Attorney’s Office says an eastern Washington doctor pled guilty to augmenting recalled medical devices to sell them as new to patients.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Philips Respironics CPAP and BiPAP machines were called in June 2021 due to foam in the device that could cause health risks including inflammatory response, asthma, nausea or vomiting, and toxic or cancer-causing effects.
57-year-old Dr. Eric Haeger of Brewster was accused of purchasing more than 500 used and recalled devices online, manually removing the foam, and providing them as new to Washington Medicaid patients. Dr. Haeger also directed his staff to bill Medicaid as if the devices were new.
An online search shows a Dr. Eric Haeger as the head of Central Washington Sleep Diagnostic Center which has locations in Brewster, Wenatchee, Spokane Valley, and Moses Lake.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office says Dr. Haeger pled guilty Wednesday to the charges of adulterating and misbranding medical devices with the intent to defraud or mislead.
His sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 24, 2026. Dr. Haeger faces up to three years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
