SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane City Council passed a ban on digital algorithms that landlords use to set rent prices.
The ban passed in a 5-2 vote at Monday’s City Council meeting. Councilmembers Jonathan Bingle and Michael Cathcart were the two members who opposed this ordinance.
City staff say the programs allow landlords to share rent data anonymously, with algorithms determining maximum rental charges. Supporters of the ban say this creates an unfair environment for renters.
