SHOSHONE COUNTY, Idaho — A male hunter died after becoming stranded in heavy snow while hunting near Clarkia, authorities said.
The Shoshone County Sheriff’s Office received a call on the morning of November 6 about two overdue hunters who had contacted a friend the previous evening to report they were stuck in snow in the woods outside Clarkia.
A backcountry search team was immediately dispatched to the area. After a full day of unsuccessful phone pings and searching by deputies and family members, relatives located the hunters.
The hunters’ pickup truck had become stuck in the snow. The male hunter attempted to use his ATV to find help, but the heavy snow and difficult terrain caused the ATV to become stuck as well.
Both hunters then attempted to walk out of the area on foot. During this effort, the male hunter died, and the female hunter remained with him until they were found by family members.
The Sheriff’s Office has not released the names of the hunters or additional details about the circumstances surrounding the man’s death. The condition of the female hunter has not been disclosed.
