AIRWAY HEIGHTS, Wash. — Dozens of families received boxes of food on Saturday as local organizations worked to make sure families don’t go hungry during the government shutdown.
Due to the ongoing federal government shutdown, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits were paused on November 1, leaving over 40 million low-income Americans without access to the benefits that help put food on their tables.
In response, Airway Heights Baptist Church Food Bank organized a food drive for members of the community.
154 families lined up in the parking lot to receive food boxes.
Volunteers, including members of the Airway Heights Police Department, helped facilitate the drive.
“We understand that many of you are concerned about how to provide for your families. We want to assure you that help is available and share resources where you can find support. Additionally, we encourage you to consider ways you can make a difference for your friends, family, and neighbors. Together, we can build a compassionate and supportive community during these challenging times,” wrote AHPD in a Facebook post.
The Airway Heights Baptist Church Foodbank (12322 W. Sunset Hwy.) runs food drives is open to the community the first and third Saturday of every month, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.
Donations of non-perishable food can be dropped off at City Hall, Airway Heights Police Department and Airway Heights Fire Department.
