SPOKANE, Wash. — A deadly shooting Wednesday night shattered the peace of a typically quiet Spokane neighborhood where families regularly walk the streets and children play in backyards.
The shooting occurred around 8:45 p.m. on September 25 near the intersection of 34th Avenue and Havana Street in the Glenrose neighborhood, just blocks from Chase Middle School.
The Glenrose neighborhood usually has a peaceful atmosphere, where the most common sights are families taking evening walks or children winding down from backyard play dates.
However, on Wednesday night when police officers arrived at the scene, they found two men already dead and a third man critically injured.
Police said all three people involved in the shooting knew each other, though investigators are still working to determine the extent of their relationship and what led to the shooting.
The gunfire sent shockwaves through the residential area, where neighbors described hearing the gunshots that pierced the quiet evening.
“We heard anywhere from like 12 to 14 gunshots, maybe 16 gunshots, pretty quickly,” said Andres Burgess, who lives across the street from where the shooting occurred. “My brother and I ran over and saw multiple people who were shot and were trying to help as much as we could.”
Burgess was inside his home with his wife, son and friends when the violence erupted. He described the house where the shooting took place as one where children often played outside.
The shooting’s impact extended beyond the immediate scene, with stray bullets striking neighboring homes.
“I felt very bad for the neighbors across the street because they actually had bullets go into their house and into their kid’s bedroom,” Burgess said.
Jasmine Glidewell lives two doors down from the shooting and said the event was nerve-wracking, especially since she chose the neighborhood for it’s safety and calm.
“It was just scary,” she said. “It was right in front of us. I moved to try to get away from that.”
