If you bank with Washington Trust Bank, stay alert and beware of potential phone scams.
On Wednesday, Washington Trust Bank sent an alert to customers saying it was aware of fraudulent activity targeting customers via texts and phone calls.
The texts claim your account has been flagged for fraudulent activity and prompts the recipient to click a link and provide personal information, but it is a scam.
“If you receive a suspicious text message like this, DO NOT RESPOND,” said Washington Trust Bank.
Instead, customers should call the Washington Trust Bank Priority Service team at 1-800-788-4578 to verify if the message you received is legitimate or not.
Scam phone calls claiming to be from the bank’s fraud prevention department have also gone out, and should be ignored.
Washington Trust Bank said if you receive a call like this you should hang up immediately and call the Priority Service team to ensure your account is secure.
“Scammers are always looking for new ways to take advantage of consumers, which is why it’s important to remain vigilant whenever you’re online. Some of the best ways to protect yourself online include never sharing your user ID or password with anyone else, not using public computers to do your banking, and not clicking on links in unrecognized emails. Remember, Washington Trust Bank will never ask for sensitive account information such as your username and password,” said Washington Trust Bank in it’s announcement.
