SANDPOINT — Idaho Fish and Game will offer free bear safety training to North Idaho residents later this month, providing hands-on instruction with bear spray and protective measures for those living in bear habitat.
The agency will host the “North Idaho Bear Fair” on Sept. 27 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Bonner County Fairgrounds, located at 4203 N. Boyer Ave.
The event requires no registration and includes free food and prize drawings.
The event will feature hands-on bear spray training using inert canisters and Fish and Game’s remote-controlled charging grizzly bear.
Participants who complete the training will receive a free canister of bear spray while supplies last.
Additional activities include electric fencing demonstrations for protecting livestock and instruction on safe camping practices in bear country.
Attendees can also use a cider press to make fresh apple cider by bringing their own apples and containers.
The fair is a partnership among Fish and Game, the Kootenai Tribe of Idaho, the U.S. Forest Service and other agencies.
