ATHOL, Idaho — Firefighters are making progress on a growing wildfire burning near Athol on Tuesday afternoon, according to Bonner County Sheriff’s Office.
The “Sage Brush Fire” burning about 3 miles northeast of Athol is currently burning on about 47 acres, which is equal to 35.5 football fields, and is 30% contained.
BCSO said cooler temperatures and humidity overnight helped crews with suppression efforts.
As of Tuesday afternoon, Level 1 (GET READY) evacuations are in place for the following areas: Rocksprings, Doe Run, Hatchet Lane, Genesis Lane, Trails End, Misty Meadows, Rodeo Road, Resort Road, Sta off Mi Road, Candle Hill Road, Sagebrush Way, Parkwood Drive, Zeeland Road, Rain Drive, Angelwood Lane.
The fire is burning near private property and many owners have opened private gates to give firefighters access to the area.
BCSO asks people to avoid the area if possible to give crews the space they need to work.
A 40% chance of rain is expected to help fire crews control the fire on Tuesday.
An evacuation center has been set up at Real Life Ministries Church, 30447 Rough Stock Road (at Rough Stock Road and Highway 54) in Athol.
Certain animals in need of evacuation from the 20-acre “Sage Brush Fire” burning near Athol can be taken to the Bonner County Fairgrounds.
