SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — Deputies arrested a man for driving under the influence and driving recklessly in Spokane Valley on Friday, according to Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.
On September 5 around 10:30 p.m., Washington State Patrol asked SCSO’s Air 1 helicopter to help track a suspected impaired driver who was driving down McDonald Road toward Sprague Avenue.
Air 1 followed the Audi, driven by 37-year-old Martez Tolliver, as he ignored stop lights and stop signs and turned off his car lights.
SCSO said a deputy attempted to stop Tolliver from continuing to drive recklessly by blocking 8th Avenue, but Tolliver crashed into the patrol car and continued driving. The deputy was uninjured, but the patrol car had to be towed from the scene.
Nearby, deputies deployed spike strips, causing some of Tolliver’s tires to become deflated.
On Wilbur Road, a deputy attempted a PIT maneuver on Tolliver’s Audi. A PIT maneuver is a law enforcement technique where a patrol car makes contact with a suspect car in order to stop it from driving away.
The PIT maneuver was unsuccessful and Tolliver was able to drive out of the spin onto North Union Road.
On North Union, he soon crashed into the back of a trailer attached to a parked car.
SCSO deputies, WSP troopers, SPD Police and a K9 unit arrived at the crash and attempted to get Tolliver to surrender. SCSO said he initially ignored commands and smoked a cigarette in his car.
Around 11 p.m., Tolliver was arrested and booked into Spokane County Jail for reckless driving, assault, attempting to elude police and driving under the influence.
