SPOKANE, Wash. — Gonzaga’s campus was buzzing with new Bulldogs and their families on Friday as volunteers waited at the ready to help freshman move into their new homes.
The university is welcoming new leadership this year as well, with anticipation building before the new school year.
“I’m so excited to see my dorm. I don’t even know what to expect,” said Maya Rolon, an incoming freshman.
Besides moving in, families took lots of photos together, signed up for campus tours and explored the greater Spokane area.
“Spokane loves Gonzaga. I think Gonzaga loves Spokane, too. It’s always so fun. Like during March Madness even now. Right? Like, there’s goes, like signs everywhere. And it’s a fun community to be a part of,” said Becky Stockton, who works at Gonzaga.
“Meeting new people, walking around and talking to people and it’s good seeing a sense of community,” said Will Dixon, an incoming freshman.
For parents, many admitted the day was bittersweet.
“Feeling, sad but excited,” said Robert Dixon, a Zag dad.
As a parent herself, Gonzaga President Katia Passerini said she sees herself in the excitement of the incoming students.
“I can relate about the passion and an excitement that you see on campus when the students are back, because that’s really the heart of the university, and it’s beautiful to be here in the summer, but without them it’s not the same,” Passerini said.
Classes begin on Tuesday. This year’s new students represent 31 different states, several tribal nations, and 19 countries.
Students say they’re looking forward to the year ahead.
“It’s a great weekend to be a Zag. Every weekend is a great weekend to be a Zag. And so this is just a really exciting time and I can’t wait for the school year,” said McKale Granados, an RHA volunteer.
