Update, 12:20 p.m. on August 9: The Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant who was hit while helping remove hay bales from eastbound I-90 near Four Lakes Saturday morning has died.
“It is with great sadness and the heaviest of hearts that the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office confirms the line-of-duty loss of a Spokane County Sheriff’s Office Sergeant, a member of our agency and law enforcement family,” SCSO said.
According to the Sheriff’s Office website, this is the first line-of-duty death in Spokane County since 2003.

SPOKANE, Wash – Washington State Patrol confirms a sheriff’s deputy was among those injured in a crash on Interstate 90 west of Spokane Saturday morning.
The crash is still blocking eastbound lanes near the Four Lakes exit, 10 miles west of Spokane.
Washington State Patrol says hay bales fell off a truck just before 8 a.m.
A sheriff’s office sergeant pulled over to the left side of eastbound I-90 to help the truck driver remove the hay bale from the highway.
A car and a motorcycle were driving eastbound near the crash. The car pulled over to the right side of the road while the motorcyclist moved toward the left side of the road.
The motorcyclist crashed into the parked patrol car. The motorcycle then ricocheted into the Sheriff’s Office deputy.
The sergeant is in critical condition. The motorcyclist is also in serious condition.
“We are all praying for this brave hero,” WSP’s public information officer posted to X, referring to the sheriff’s deputy.
WSP says the road is expected to be closed for the next several hours.
