SPOKANE, Wash. — 4 News Now is once again tracking price changes on four common household items: a pineapple from Mexico, a Barbie doll from Indonesia, a t-shirt from Jordan, and a car headlight bulb from China. This month marks the first time since tracking began that no price changes occurred.
Tracking began in April, when people wondered how President Trump’s tariffs on imported goods would affect items in stores. When goods are imported to the U.S., tariffs are applied. The percentage of tariff tax varies by product and country.

While all four items remained the same as last month, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell worries prices could truly begin to change now that high tariffs are in full effect.
“At a time when people are concerned about affordability, why are we making home products more expensive right before people go back to school, making those expenses, like backpacks and others, more expensive for consumers? And that’s what the tariffs are doing,” Cantwell said.
Economists say price changes due to tariffs aren’t likely to happen right away. Those changes will happen once high-tariff goods start replacing the current inventory.
On August 7, prices on various items included:
1 Gold Pineapple at the grocery store (grown in Mexico) – $5.491 Barbie Doll at Walmart (made in Indonesia) – $12.941 plain white t-shirt at Walmart (made in Jordan) – $7.98 1 car light bulb at local auto store (made in China) – $7.99
4 News Now will continue to monitor costs to see how tariffs affect local goods.
