PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State football was making last-minute adjustments before their final scrimmage of fall camp Saturday.
The Cougs get two scrimmages all camp so they need to make Saturday count.
It’s the last chance for the players to make their case for playing time before the season begins and head coach Jake Dickert has a list of things he’s looking for.
“I want to see these guys play fast. I want to see guys eliminate hesitation so we can see their best,” Dickert said.
Dickert is expecting nothing less than their best from his quarterbacks. This scrimmage is John Mateer and Zevi Eckhaus’ final test to see if they have what it takes to be the leading man.
A decision on the starter is still expected to be announced Monday.
“John is good at getting strides going off script and Zevi continues to battle every phase of it,” Dickert said.
Now who is on the receiving end of these passes also needs to be finalized. There’s no doubts with Kyle Williams, but with plenty of new faces in the receiver room – it’s still a very real competition.
“Every guy is coming in today and throughout the whole camp and just attacking it,” said wide receivers coach Nick Edwards. “They know that the next guy coming in is just as good as them and to go ahead and compete.”
Earning their spot comes with having a voice and presence on and off the field. Edwards said in addition to Williams, guys like Josh Meredith and Kyle Maxwell have been stepping up to the plate.
“Josh Meredith, he’s one of the guys that has been vocal… he’s been doing some amazing things for us and he’s stepped up into being a leader,” said Edwards.
The Cougars will scrimmage on Gesa Field Saturday and will be back in action for their season-opener against Portland State on August 31.
