SPOKANE, Wash. — Do you have properly maintained smoke alarms in your home? Here are some safety tips to make sure your smoke alarms are ready to protect you and your family in case of an emergency.
The U.S. Fire Administration says it is important to make sure smoke alarms are in each bedroom, outside of each sleeping area and on every level of a home, including the basement.
Larger homes may need even more smoke alarms to make sure every area can be properly alerted in case of a fire. Interconnected smoke alarms are also recommended, that way if one goes off, the rest follow.
Smoke alarms should be tested once a month to make sure they are working properly. Alarms need to be fully replaced every ten years from the manufacture date.
The National Fire Protection Association says roughly 3 out of 5 fire deaths happen in homes with no working smoke alarms.
