SPOKANE, Wash. — Former Spokane City Council President Ben Stuckart is home tonight after making his initial appearance in Federal court Tuesday morning.
Stuckart, along with eight other community members, is facing federal charges related to a June 11 anti-ICE protest in downtown Spokane.
All nine defendants are charged with Conspiracy to Impede or Injure Officers.
The courtroom was packed for Tuesday morning’s appearances. Nearly every seat was filled by public attendees and public defenders, one for each defendant.
The first group of defendants included Stuckart, 34-year-old Mikki Hatfield and 38-year-old Bobbi Silva. Both Hatfield and Silva face additional charges for Assault on a Federal Officer.
Silva and Hatfield are being held in custody at the Federal Court building, with a detention hearing scheduled for Friday at 10 a.m.
The U.S. Government decided there was no need to keep Stuckart or the other defendants in custody at this time.
Shortly after his release, Stuckart told 4 News Now the arrests weren’t unexpected, but did not share any other details.
Once released, Stuckart and the other defendants are under strict conditions.
They are not allowed to talk to each other unless their attorneys are present and they must stay away from the ICE building in Spokane.
Defendants have also been instructed to not alter or delete any of social media posts.
The released defendants will have to return to court as the trial begins.
Looking forward, the trial will begin with a discovery process for both defense and prosecution, followed by a jury trial to decide the verdict.
