OTIS ORCHARDS, Wash. — The Spokane County Prosecutor’s Office determined an officer will not face charges for shooting a man suspected of intentionally hitting vehicles with his car.
According to law enforcement, officers were investigating multiple reported hit and runs near North Malvern Road and East Wellesley Avenue on December 21, 2024.
The suspect was identified as 42-year-old Shane Lafond.
The prosecutor’s office said one of the victims followed Lafond while updating 911 on their locations.
Lafond was eventually located by Liberty Lake Officer Darrin Powers at a home on E. Kildea and got into a pickup truck.
Officer Powers said Lafond did not follow commands and charged at him with a knife. Powers fired two shots at Lafond.
Lafond was hit, taken to an area hospital for treatment, and survived. He faces charges of assault, malicious mischief, and hit and run.
Lafond’s trial date is set for August 25.
