SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane Mayor Lisa Brown is proposing new ordinances aimed to incentivize building more affordable housing in the city.
The proposal includes deferring fees for developers on affordable housing. The City Council still has to pass it.
Mayor Brown says deferring these fees could mean developers won’t owe the city until an apartment or house is move-in ready instead of being charged the fees up front.
Developers would be able to defer up to $150,000 of those fees. Many local housing organizations, like Habitat for Humanity and the Spokane Alliance, are on board.
“We have a goal to create over 22,000 new housing units in the city by 2046,” Mayor Brown said. “It’s ambitious, but it’s an attainable goal.”
Mayor Brown is also proposing a rule change that would remove charges for new developments connecting the existing utility system.
The Spokane City Council will discuss the ordinance at next week’s council meeting.
