SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane commuters returning from the holiday weekend will encounter significant construction delays starting Monday as new infrastructure work begins in northwest Spokane and downtown road improvements resume.
The city will launch a major construction project in the Northwest Terrace area that will close Assembly Street in both directions for several months. The project focuses on enhancing water, sewer, stormwater and traffic infrastructure north of the Dwight Merkel Sports Complex.
Drivers will need to follow detour routes through surrounding neighborhoods to reach their destinations. City officials warn commuters to expect major slowdowns as everyone adjusts to the road closure.
The Northwest Terrace construction project is scheduled to wrap up by November.
Meanwhile, downtown Spokane will see the resumption of the city’s “Grind and Overlay” project on Washington Street. Lane reductions and slow traffic are expected between 3rd Avenue and Spokane Falls, cutting through the heart of downtown.
The city plans to post signs warning drivers of detours and alternate routes. Most paving work will take place at night to minimize traffic disruption during peak hours.
The Washington Street project is anticipated to finish around July 20.
City officials recommend drivers plan extra time for their commutes and consider alternate routes while both construction projects are underway.
