COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho – The Coeur d’Alene firefighter who survived the shooting that killed two of his colleagues is off the ventilator and talking.
Engineer Dave Tysdal was shot Sunday as he responded to a wildfire on Canfield Mountain.
Two other responding firefighters were also shot and did not survive.
Coeur d’Alene Fire updated Tysdal’s condition Wednesday, saying he’s now stable, off the ventilator and able to talk.
Deputy Fire Marshal Craig Etherton says Tysdal suffered severe chest trauma and spinal trauma in the shooting.
“Doctors are optimistic,” Etherton said. “But [they] say he has a long recovery ahead of him.”
Kootenai County Fire and Rescue Battalion Chief Frank Harwood and Coeur d’Alene Fire Battalion Chief John Morrison died in the attack.
The gunman died at the scene; investigators say he shot himself.
