COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — Hundreds lined Interstate 90 from Spokane to Coeur d’Alene to pay their respects as two fallen firefighters made their final trip home.
Battalion Chiefs Frank Harwood and John Morrison were murdered while responding to a wildfire near Cansfield Mountain on Sunday. Fire Engineer David Tysdal is still recovering from gunshot wounds that nearly took his life.
People stood shoulder to shoulder along 4th Street in Coeur d’Alene, waiting in the heat to honor the men who served their community. The crowd included first responders, families with young children, and friends.
“Just total sadness over the whole thing,” said David Stanea, who has lived in Coeur d’Alene for more than 70 years. “It is a tight knit community, when one cry we all cry.”
Community members handed out water bottles to those standing in the heat.
For Terra Schlinker, who has formed a strong connection with first responders, the outpouring of support was no surprise.
“They are loved by the community we will stand behind them 100%,” she said. “These people put themselves on the line everyday for us, and we need to appreciate them every day.”
