MOSCOW, Idaho – The man accused of killing four University of Idaho students in 2022 has agreed to plead guilty to all charges and avoid a trial.
ABC News reports that Bryan Kohberger has accepted a plea deal and that he’ll change his plea in court on July 2nd.
On the Facebook page for one of the victims Kaylee Goncalves, the family poste, “It’s true! We are beyond furious at the State of Idaho. They have failed us.”
ABC’s Kayna Whitworth reports that sources tell her Kohberger will serve four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole.
He’ll also be sentenced to 10 years on the burglary count.
With the plea deal, Kohberger also waives all right to appeal.
He faced the death penalty if the case went to trial.
Kohberger is accused of killing Goncalves, Ethan Chapin, Madison Mogen and Xana Kernodle in November 2022.
At the time, Kohberger was a PhD student studying criminology at nearby Washington State University.
The prosecution and defense have been moving towards an August trial in Boise.
The trial was moved from Latah County because of the size of the potential jury pool.
According to ABC News, prosecutors sent a letter to the victims’ families, saying the defense approached the state last week and asked to be presented with an offer.
Prosecutors then met with the families to discuss.
According to ABC, the letter said “This resolution is our sincere attempt to seek justice for your family. This agreement ensures that the defendant will be convicted, will spend the rest of his life in prison, and will not be able to put you and the other families through the uncertainty of decades of post-conviction appeals. Your viewpoints weighed heavily in our decision-making process, and we hope that you may come to appreciate why we believe this resolution is in the best interest of justice.”
The court schedule online not changed, but ABC says Kohberger will change his plea Wednesday, then be sentenced later in July.
