SPOKANE, Wash. — As you and your friends and family start planning your Fourth of July celebrations, make sure your fun is safe and legal!
According to the Washington State Fire Marshal, fireworks caused 150 injuries and sparked 271 fires in Washington last year.
Oliver Daniels works at one of the area’s many fireworks stands and said that despite the safety concerns and restrictions, sales are up.
“It’s been very busy, honestly,” Daniels said.
Safety experts say there are a few things you’ll want to do to minimize the risk and keep your fireworks celebration as safe as possible.
“Stay a safe distance away from them if you are going to light them up,” Daniels advised customers. “A fire extinguisher too. That can help a lot.”
Experts also recommend keeping a full bucket of water nearby, in case a fire should spark.
Beyond basic distance and water safety, officials said it’s important to purchase only consumer-grade fireworks and avoid any damaged products.
Decorative streamers and other party materials should also be kept far from fireworks, to avoid sparking a fire.
The legal landscape for fireworks varies dramatically across the region. In Spokane County, fireworks are prohibited in Spokane, Spokane Valley, Liberty Lake, Millwood, Cheney, and unincorporated areas. Airway Heights stands as one of the few exceptions, allowing fireworks specifically on July 4.
Across the state line in Kootenai County, Idaho residents can purchase and light non-aerial fireworks that remain closer to the ground.
However, both Idaho and Washington restrict fireworks use to periods around Independence Day and New Year’s Eve.
Local fire officials said before purchasing and lighting fireworks, you should make sure you know where and when you can legally and safely use them.
