A former Spokane city councilman is staging a protest outside a Spokane ICE office in order to stop agents from transporting a young man from Venezuela who has applied for asylum.
Several protesters have been detained by law enforcement outside of the ICE building as of Wednesday evening.
Ben Stuckart put a call to action on Facebook, asking people to join him at the office on West Cataldo.
As of Wednesday afternoon, he’s sitting in front of the bus that he says will take the young man to Tacoma, the location of the Northwest ICE Processing Center.
According to Stuckart, he took on legal guardianship of the young man a few weeks back. The man, who turned 21 today, has already filed the necessary documents and is awaiting a court hearing.
Stuckart says he went with him to ICE to check in today and the person was detained.
“The Latino community needs the rest of our community now,” Stuckart wrote on Facebook. Not tonight, not Saturday but right now!!!!”
Someone sprayed white paint on the windshield of the bus. There are protesters carrying signs.
An ICE agent came out and told the crowd they would be arrested if they interfere with a federal case.
Spokane Police and SWAT units arrived on scene and were blocking the side of the building. Protesters were chanting “let them go.”
Mayor Lisa Brown issued the following statement on the protests:
“I am aware of the situation unfolding outside of the Federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in Spokane. The City of Spokane respects and upholds everyone’s First Amendment rights and right to be on public property.” “The City of Spokane continues to uphold the Keep Washington Working Act. The Spokane Police Department will address violations of Spokane Municipal Code.”“I encourage everyone to remain peaceful and safe, and my heart goes out to families being separated. Our unity is stronger than any attempt to divide us.”
This is a developing story. We have a crew on the scene and will update as needed.
