Washington State University’s College of Nursing is launching a new program to build up health care services in rural areas.
The initiative, funded by a Washington State Department of Health grant, will allow nursing students to train in their hometowns through local clinical experiences tailored to the unique demands of rural health care.
The goal is to help alleviate the workforce shortage in Washington’s rural communities.
“When complicated cases come in, one of the skills that rural nurses especially need to be able to have is to stabilize for transport,” said Bev Mayfield, clinical assistant professor at WSU. “We have to do a lot of training and simulation practice so that they’re ready.”
The program will receive $100,000 annually for three and a half years.
