Ever wondered why Miley Cyrus has that signature raspy, gravelly voice? It turns out, there’s an actual medical reason behind it — and no, it’s not just from partying hard in her early 20s.
Miley has a condition called Reinke’s edema, which causes swelling in the vocal cords. It’s often linked to vocal strain, smoking, and acid reflux. On top of that, she also has a large vocal cord polyp — something that’s shaped her iconic sound.
In her own words, Miley says:
“Being 21 and staying up and drinking and smoking and partying after every show does not help. But also in my case, it does not cause it. So my voice always sounded like this.”
She explains that the polyp has helped give her voice the tone and texture we all recognize — but it comes at a cost.
“It’s extremely difficult to perform with because it’s like running a marathon with ankle weights on.”
Despite the challenges, Miley has no plans to have it removed. She’s afraid she might lose that unique sound that helped define her career.
Oh, and in case you missed it — her new album “Something Beautiful” drops next Friday, the 30th!
