GRANT COUNTY, Wash. — A 24-year-old Quincy woman was found dead inside her car at the bottom of an irrigation canal in rural Quincy on Tuesday.
According to the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, Erika Martinez Chaves was believed to be driving north on the west canal maintenance road near Road 7-Northwest and Road R-Northwest when she lost control.
The sheriff’s office says she drove into the canal and was not able to get out of the car.
The canal is 75 feet wide and 20 feet deep near where the vehicle was found.
Her car was first spotted by a helicopter pilot flying overhead on Monday afternoon. Crews returned to the area on Tuesday to recover the vehicle and Martinez’s body.
