SPOKANE, Wash. — The City of Spokane and Spokane Arts are inviting local artists to submit designs for an artistic crosswalk on the South Hill.
The crosswalk will be located at the intersection of West Comstock Court and South Lincoln Drive, next to Comstock Park.
Artists are encouraged to submit designs that reflect the natural environment of Comstock Park and the surrounding neighborhood, with a special emphasis on trees.
To maintain traffic safety, the project has specific design limitations. Artists must avoid using large amounts of bright green that might be confused with bike lanes, as well as any red octagons that could be mistaken for stop signs.
The city will not consider designs featuring optical illusions, as these could potentially distract or confuse drivers.
The Crosswalk Program is part of the broader Asphalt Art traffic calming initiative, which aims to enhance street safety through artistic interventions.
Funding for these projects comes from photo-enforced school zone and red light tickets, with the program receiving 6% of those funds.
All submitted designs must be original work by the artist, following the outlined design requirements and complying with existing copyright laws.
The application deadline is July 1 at midnight. You can find it here.
