Do your kids know how to call 911 and what to say to the operator?
April is National 911 Education Month and first responders and other safety officials want to remind families how they can best be prepared when making an emergency call.
When calling 911, people of any age should remember:
Know Your Location – telling the operator where you are is crucial, especially in unfamiliar placesIdentify the Emergency – Tell the dispatcher exactly what is happening so they can send the right respondersStay Calm – Staying calm and speaking clearly are the best ways to getting help quickly Stay on the Line – Never hang up until the dispatcher tells you it’s okay to do so, because they might need more information
Make sure to talk to your kids about when it’s necessary to call 911. Pretending to make a call is a great way to help kids feel prepared in case of an emergency. For more information and resources, visit nena.org and 911forkids.com.
